Ear cropping is simply put plane wrong. Cosmetic surgery, such as ear cropping should be illegal in all states. I believe this because the procedure is long and painful, and the healing process for the dog is even worse. Sadly most people choose to have their dogs ears cropped at a very young age, some even choose to do it before they spay or neuter their animal. A majority of people are looking for the aggressive look in the animal, but what they do not realize is, is the pain the animal has to go through just to look how one may want them to look.
At the hospital I see about 2-3 surgeries a week that involve ear cropping. The procedure its self is longer than a routine spay or neuter, and also the dog loses more blood. First in order to even start the procedure, the dog must be sedated before surgery, and after. This is because of the massive amount of pain the animal feels after having the procedure over. Once the surgery is over the ears are bandaged and posted in order to keep them standing straight up, in order to do this bandages must be place inside the ear, and outside of it. Placing bandages inside the ears always causes debri to build up in the ear canal and can cause an inner ear infection. After the pet is released to its owners they are required to come back in about a week for a bandage change. Before the bandage change can even began the dog must be sedated, because touching the ears is extremely painful. Sadly the majority of the dogs still cry after the sedation.
The procedure itself is unnecessary; ear cropping should be illegal in all states. The animal is put through immense pain just have an edgy more aggressive look.
Hello, I have to say that I agree that crooping your dog ears is wrong. From what I have heard and from the pictures it looks very painful. I feel that dog ears should be left as they are,if they ears were meant to be pointing up they would have been born that way .What is so sad to me is the dog owners. Having your dog go through a painful cosmetic surgery just to obtain a certain look that is not needed is selfish of the owner. Also there are alot of complications that comes along with this procedure and the dog be in lots of pain. You are suppose to love and care for your animal not put them through or cause them any pain. This procedure should definately be banded and illegal in all states.
ReplyDeleteIt is definitely wrong to cut a dogs ears just for cosmetic appearance. I can only imagine the pain that these dogs go through. I had no idea that such a severe surgery took place in order for these dogs to obtain a certain look. And the owners should be ashame of themselves. I wish that someone could make the pet owners that chose this surgery for their dogs, suffer as much as the animals do. I have a small poodle and could not imagine putting him through something like this.
ReplyDeleteI understand that the pet owners are going for a certain look and that sometimes a dog must have this surgery for health reasons, but to cut a dogs ear so they can look meaner or more vicious is ridiculous. God made no mistakes when he made his creatures and when these pet owners start taking it amongst themselves to correct what needs no correcting, at the expense of these animals, is a slap in the face to the man upstairs and again just down right animal cruelty. I think that there should be a law that states: if your are not cutting your dogs ears for a medical reason then sure, go ahead and cut your dogs ears but not before the vet cuts your ears. I bet that will cut down on the number of people that want their dogs ears cut!
I completely understand what you mean by people cropping dogs ears for the reason for looks but I was wondering you take on cropping ears for a purpose. An example of this would be a Doberman. The reason why they cropped their ears is to increase their hearing as a guard dog. But for someone to just crop their dogs’ ears just for looks is not right. Most people probably have no idea how to clean the dressing and wounds. I’m sure that this sometime creates more serious problems then what people think.
